Nancy Drucilla Medders, 1847-1931

1Nancy Drucilla Medders was born 16th July 1847 in Baxley, Appling County, Georgia and died  4th January 1931 in Bacon County, Georgia. She was the daughter of Benjamin Batchelor MEDDERS (1809-1900) and Nancy C, (TUCKER) (1811-1849). Nancy was the sister of (3) brothers that would join the confederacy during the U.S. Civil War.

Early Life  

2Nancy Drucilla was the 7th of 12 children. She had (4) half brothers and sisters. Nancy like all of her other siblings were born in Baxley, Appling County, Georgia (map left).

Nancy Drucilla Medders first name recording was at age 3 on 330th August 1850 in Appling County, Georgia when she was living with her parents and siblings. Her father and stepmother Elizabeth TUCKER who was her father’s stepdaughter were recorded as “Meadows”. Nancy’s mother Nancy C. (Tucker) had died in 1849. Nancy siblings at this time were; Martha Patsy (1831-1918), Mary (1834-1917), John Smith, James Riley, Loucinda (1841-?), William Washington (1845-1924) and Margaret (1849-?). Nancy’s family is recorded on (Schedule I, line 40, household  #152).

Nancy’s father Benjamin was one of the original founders of what is now Bacon County, Georgia.

Nancy Drucilla Medders is living in Holmesville, Appling County, Georgia from on 414th July 1860  with her father and stepmother Elizabeth Tucker, also living with her are her siblings; Cinderella “Loucinda”, William, and Margaret. Nancy and her family are being recorded with the last name of “Batchelor” her fathers middle name. Nancy and her family are recorded on (page #60, line 19, household #368).

Nancy like many of her other siblings would see her brothers; John Smith “Meadows” MEDDERS (1836-1900) fight at the Battle of Jonesboro in which he lost his right arm above the elbow; James Riley “Meadows” MEDDERS (1838-1920) fight at the Battle of Nashville/Nashville Station and William Washington MEDDERS. All three of her brothers fought for the South.

Nancy is living in living in Holmesville, Appling County, Georgia on 520th July 1870 with her brother-in-law Robert Martin Holton and her sister Cinderella “Loucinda” Medders Holton. Nancy is recorded on (page #72, household #443).

Nancy Drucilla Medders married Rev. William C. ALDRIDGE (1851-1934) on 615th May 1873 in Appling County, Georgia. They would have (11) recorded children together. Her husband William C. Aldridge was the son of Jessie ALDRIDGE, Jr. (1814-1887) and Jemima “Howe” ALDRIDGE (1822-?). William was also the grandson of Jesse ALDRIDGE, Sr. (1765-?) a Revolutionary War Soldier.

Nancy and William C. Aldridge and family appear to have been missed in the 1880 Census, as they do not appear in any county census taken that year.

Nancy and William C Aldridge are living in Appling County, Georgia on 729th June 1900. William is shown as a farmer with his wife Nancy D. and family. The children living with them at this time are; Mary R age 19 - Viola L age 17 - William I age 15- Sinda age 14 - Benjamin S age 10 - James A. age 8 and Richard S age 6. William and Nancy according to the 1900 census had 11 children but 2 were deceased. The (2) children that were deceased both died as infants, Nancy C d. 17 Dec 1875 & John W d. 15 Aug 1877. William and family are recorded on (page #22A, line 26, household 377).

Nancy and William C Aldridge are living in Louisville, Appling County, Georgia on 87th May 1910. William is shown as a farmer with his wife Nancy D. and family. They are living on the Baxley Rockingham Road area. The children living with them at this time are; Laura V age 27 - William I age 25 - James A. age 17 and Richard S age 16. William and Nancy have lost (3) more children by this time; Mary R., Martha and Sindy Elizabeth who died 13 Dec 1909. William and Nancy are living next door to her nephew William H Medders and his family. William and family are recorded on (page #12B, line 36, household #244).  

Nancy and William C Aldridge are living in Louisville, Bacon County, Georgia on 16th January 1920 (map left). William is shown as s a farmer with his wife Nancy D. and family. William and Nancy have 2 granddaughters living with them they are; Okella age 14 and Ella Mae Thomas age 11, not sure which daughter of William they belong to. They are living next door to both of his son's William I and Richard S Aldridge. William and family are recorded on (page #13B, line 56, household #252).

William and Nancy appear to have been missed again in the 1930 Census, as they do not appear in any census taken in Georgia.

Death Place 12History-Future

Nancy Drucilla Medders Aldridge died at age 84 on 104th Jan 1931 in Bacon County, Georgia; She is buried at Big Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Alma. Bacon County, Georgia, along with her husband and children. Drucilla preceded her husband in death. William followed Nancy only (3) years later.
