Benjamin Richardson Sr.*, R.S 1740-1799
1
Benjamin Richardson, R.S. Esquire, was born 1740 in Tyrell County, North Carolina and died 1799 in Bulloch County, Georgia. He was the son of Zachariah RICHARDSON (1695-1776) and Sarah BUTTERFIELD (1701-1788).

Birthplace 2History-Future

Tyrrell County was established in 1729 as a precinct of Albemarle County. In 1799, six years after Columbia was chartered, the town was selected as the seat of Tyrrell County. The name of the town was changed to Columbia in 1810, to avoid confusion with another Elizabethtown in North Carolina. The 1870 Federal census suggests a population of slightly over one hundred people, who subsisted on livelihoods such as mercantile trade, milling, county administration, and maritime occupations including boat building. Columbia's population increase after the Civil War was largely the result of the expansion of the local lumber industry.

Early Life
3
Benjamin Richardson, Sr. married on 30th September 1767, Sarah MIZELL (1740-1802). Sarah was the daughter of Luke MIZELL (1706-1769) and Susannah THOMPSON (1708-?). Sarah was born in North Carolina. Benjamin and Sarah had (10) recorded children.

Benjamin Richardson grew-up and began raising a family in Tyrell County, North Carolina during a time when America was in the early stages of seeking its independence from Great Britain.

Thirteen years after his marriage to Sarah Mizell, Benjamin would leave home to fight in the American Revolutionary War for about a year (see Military Service below).

Military Service

5Benjamin Richardson is listed with the Daughters of the American Revolution under DAR#600067. At this time we are currently seeking information on any major battles Benjamin mat have fought in.

Move to Georgia

6Sometime before 1799, Benjamin moved to Georgia. He Granted land in St Phillip Parish, Georgia, which became Screven County (then later Bulloch County).

Bulloch County, Georgia's 21st county was named for Archibald Bulloch, who presided over the Provincial Congress of July 4, 1775, before becoming Georgia's first Provincial Governor in 1776.
