Benjamin Riley Medders, 1880-1943*

1Benjamin Riley MEDDERS was born 25th Dec 1880 in Baxley, Appling County, Georgia and died 25th Mar 1943 in Alma, Bacon County, Georgia. He was the 8th child and son John Smith MEDDERS, C.S.A and Mary Ann ALTMAN. His father John Smith Medders fought for the South in the U.S. Civil War, where he was wounded at the Battle of Jonesboro.

Early Life

Benjamin Riley Medders was the 8th child of what would become a very large family of 12 children born to his parents. Benjamin was the grandson of one of the original-founding settlers of Bacon County Georgia, Benjamin Batchelor MEDDERS.

Benjamin grew up around a family that saw many of his very close family members participate during the US Civil War. His father John, fought at the Battle of Jonesboro, his father’s brother Uncle James Riley MEDDERS fought at the Battle of Nashville/Nashville Station, his father’s brother Uncle William Washington MEDDERS also fought for the South. You can imagine the war stories that had to have circulated during his time. 3,4As a child and young man Benjamin Riley from 1880 until 1905 lived at home with his parents and siblings.

Benjamin was a Farmer by trade from about the age of 15 to 1943.

Auction
A sale bill for an auction at the residence on February 25th 1902 also allowed, “part cash and balance time ‘til December 1st 1902 listed the following items; one horse to Mrs. Mary Medders ($110), one mule to Mary ($100). She paid one-half in cash. M. G. Thomas bought 1 cane mill for $10, a “biler” for $7, and the foot adz for .80 cents. B. R, Medders bought the organ for $25,75, W. J. bought the crosscut saw for $1 and the square for .70 cents. L. W. Nelson bought two planes for $2; L. V. Crosby bought the one-horse wagon for $8.75. Madison not surprisingly, bought on the books for .65 cents and the gun for .25 cents.

Benjamin Riley Medders married Nancy Rebekah Amelia CARTER (left, 1885-1966) on 26th February 1905 in Alma, Bacon County, Georgia. Nancy was the daughter of George Washington CARTER (1850-1935) and Harriet Jane WILLIAMS (1853-1835). Benjamin Riley and Nancy Rebekah like his mother and father had (12) recorded children.

Benjamin Riley Medders is living in Douglas, Appling County, Georgia on 56th May 1910 as a farmer with his wife Nancy and family. The children living with them at this time are Clifford L age 4 - Golda R age 1 9/12 and Myrtle age 2mths. Benjamin is recorded on (page # 129, line 74, household #263).

In 1910 Benjamin Riley and Nancy Rebekah were blessed with the birth of twins, Myrtle and Myrtice born on 9th February 1910. Unfortunately only one the children would live to adulthood. Myrtice died only 5 weeks later on the 16th March 1910. This would not be the last of their children to die at very young ages. On 27th February 1918 Benjamin and Nancy lost their 6th born child Preston at the age of 4.

Benjamin Riley Medders is living in Rockingham, Bacon County, Georgia on 68th January 1920 as a Farmer with his wife Rebecca and family. The children living with them at this time are; Clifford L age 13, Golda L age 11 - Myrtle age 9 - Rosa Lee age 7 - Hugh D age 3 and Wain "Wayne" S age 12. Benjamin is recorded on (page #44, line 58, household #127).

Over the next 10 years Benjamin and Nancy would lose (3) more children at very young ages. Their 9th born child Mildred Daisy died on 10th August 1922 at the age of 16 months. Their first born child Clifford Leon died on 29th November 1926 at the age of 20 and their 2nd born child Golda Reoma died on 29th February 1928 at the age of 22. The rest of their children would live well into adulthood and have families of their own. All of the children that died young are buried at Big Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Alma Bacon County, Georgia.

Benjamin Riley Medders is living in Louisville, Bacon County, Georgia on 716th April 1930 as a framer with his wife Rebecca and family, The children living with them at this time are; Rosa L age 17 - Hugh D age 13 - Wayne age 11 - Vernie age 6 - Bernice age 4 1/12 and Quentine age 1 year, Benjamin is recorded on (sheet #2b, line 63, household #25).

Death Place 8History-Future

Benjamin Riley Medders died in Alma, Bacon County, Georgia on 25th December 1943 and is buried at Big Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Alma, Bacon County, Georgia next to his wife Nancy Rebekah Amelia Carter Medders. Benjamin’s wife Nancy died 26th May 1966.
